New York City Launches Green Infrastructure Initiative to Combat Flooding
The City of New York announced a comprehensive green infrastructure initiative aimed at reducing urban flooding and enhancing climate resilience. The $1.2 billion program focuses on expanding green roofs, permeable pavements, and enhanced stormwater management systems across vulnerable neighborhoods.
Mayor Adams emphasized that the initiative will prioritize communities disproportionately affected by flooding, including parts of Queens and Staten Island. “Investing in sustainable infrastructure is critical to protect our residents and future-proof our city against climate impacts,” he said.
The initiative is expected to create approximately 3,000 jobs over the next five years, spanning construction, design, and maintenance roles. Environmental groups have praised the plan as a forward-looking approach to urban challenges.
The project aligns with NYC’s broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
